We use NovoRapid, he doesn't eat any special diet, he is a bit of a fussy eater and most of what he likes is stuff with carbs. On the whole it works really well, we average about 85% time in range over a month, he still has some highs and lows and activity is pretty difficult to deal with sometimes. Getting the settings right is the hardest part and given his age, currently 10, things change ALL the time.

Hi Andrew! I have some questions if you don't mind. What type of insulin do you use for looping? Does he eat low-carb or vegan or any special food? Is it "fast" enough to keep Jamie in range?

TIA,
Szabolcs

Hi Andrew I love your post, I’m going to try and be brave and take the leap to loop. Your experience really matches ours, our son was just 6 when he was diagnosed and is now 10. We were MDI then libre then Omnipod followed by dexcom. I think you may live in the same area as us? Our son doesn’t know anyone else with type 1 so if you do live near it might be nice for them to meet up? We are in mayfield in East Sussex. It would be amazing to pick your brains one day as you seem a lot more advanced on the technology front and understanding of ratios to gain better control. If you don’t live locally no worries and thx again for the well explained post. Emma

So glad to hear that the post has helped someone and it sounds like you have got great results from it. Loop is the biggest advance we have had as well and the community around it is amazing.

Thank you so much Andrew for taking the time to write and post this. I’m an omnipod and libre user who has used dexcom g6 in the past. Based entirely on what you wrote I got an old iPhone 5s, borrowed an iMac and went back to dexcom g6 and am now successfully looping. Still tweeking settings such as ISF and carb ratio but I have to say it’s the biggest advance in my control in 37 years of being type 1. My time in range is now over 80% with average glucose level at least 1 lower than before but it’s being able to go to sleep for the first time since I was 10 and not worry about either going high or a hypo that’s the biggest thing. Also it’s great being able to rely on the loop app doing all the tinkering through the day that I used to have to do manually. Thank you
